Spartans Add Talented Russian Forward

The Almaguin Spartans are thrilled to announce the addition of Mikhail Ilyin. The 2005 Forward from Novosibirsk, Russia joins the Spartans from Sibir Novosibirsk where he had 8 points in 24 games in the top Russian U18 league.

Spartans General Manager David Forde had this to say about the club’s latest addition “Mikhail is a talented young forward with a lot of potential. He has great size at 6’3 and 175 pounds and athleticism, as he comes from a family with multiple professional athletes. Mikhail see’s the ice well and can create offense off the rush and in the offensive zone. We have several good young forwards who are going to be given a great opportunity to develop and play in key situations this year.

Mikhail joined the team on Monday and got right to work in the team’s first on ice session. We have big expectations for Mikhail this season and are excited to see what he can do in Spartans uniform.

The club started on ice training Monday with 15 players, with 2 arriving this weekend and 2 more next week. We expect skilled Serbian Forward Bojan Djordjevic to arrive before October 1st and are just waiting for 3 more Visa’s. Our coaches are very happy with what they have seen so far with our group and feel we are going to have a very competitive club this season.

The guys have two big weeks of training, before the clubs first game September 22nd in West Nipissing. The club then heads to the far north for the longest road trip off the season with a back-to-back against the expansion Le Becard De Senneterre, before hosting the Bancroft Rockhounds in our Home Opener Friday October 6th.

Spartans Add Top Defensemen

The Almaguin Spartans are thrilled to announce the addition of Nikita Pecheritsyn. The 2002 Russian Defensemen played for HC Everest Kohtla-Jarve in Estonian last season. Prior to that, Nikita spent two seasons in the NA3HL for the Atlanta Capitals where he registered 28 points and 74 penalty minutes in 84 games. Overall, Nikita has played 46 games at the Men’s level registering 8 points and 24 penalty minutes.

Spartans General Manager David Forde had this to say about the club’s big addition to the blue line “I am happy to be able to add a defenseman with Nikita’s skill level and experience to our lineup. He is a strong skater, has a high hockey IQ and great size at 6’0 and 195 pounds. Nikita competes hard in both ends of the rink and will be used in every situation.

He has significant experience at the men’s level, as well as considerable experience at the North American junior level. At 18 years of age, he had 17 points and 62 penalty minutes in 37 games in the NA3HL. Now being a 21-year-old defenseman with 2 years of men’s experience under his belt, I think Nikita can be a point per game defensemen for us offensively, while also playing big minutes defensively against the other teams’ top lines.

I also feel Nikita will make a big impact in our dressing room with some of our younger players having played juniors and multiple years with pro level players. He is ready for a leadership role and will lead by example in practice and off ice training daily. He’s one of the guys that will set the pace for other guys to push themselves to. Nikita already has a Canadian Tourism Visa, so he is all set to join the club later next week.

Spartans Trade for Quebec Power Forward

The Almaguin Spartans are happy to announce that have acquired 2002 Quebec Power Forward Sebastian Del Balso from the West Nipissing Lynx for a 2024 8th Round Draft Pick and a PDF. Last season Del Balso suited up for the Bancroft Rockhounds (GMHL), Vegreville and Barrhead (CAJHL), where he put up 13 goals and 21 assists for 34 points, and 58 penalty minutes in 52 games.
Spartans General Manager David Forde had this to say about the addition of Del Balso “Sebastian is a veteran forward with great size at 6’2 and 210 pounds. He plays a 200-foot game, plays physical and can contribute offensively on a nightly basis.
Sebastian proved in Bancroft last year as a 20-year-old that he can play in a top 6 role in the GMHL and I feel with another season under his belt and a great off season where he has attended professional level training camps, that Sebastian can have a big season.
I think Sebastian can put up a point per game this season and be matched up against other teams’ top lines defensively. We also feel he can be a leader on and off the ice for our younger players.
We will have a lot of veteran additions to announce over the coming weeks heading into the season and we are happy with the direction our roster is heading.”
